Leianne Nordstrom

Tell us about the coach (over the last 12 months)

Leianne has just completed a successful season in the 9th grade and a 5 aside tournament. She is a parent of two boys in the team and has been part of the school set up of the last few year. She has created a squad that are passionate about football, playing with their friends and welcoming to others. She uses very cleaver analogies within her coaching that help the children understand the game. She has a real focus of community and creating a parent group who are connect, supportive and are always a pleasure to watch on the sidelines.

How has the coach demonstrated commitment to Balance is Better/Good Sports philosophies in the last 12 months?

Leianne has instilled her passion for the game onto her team. She gives equal opportunity to all players in the team regardless of skills / ability. There is a real focus on having fun, being a team player and staying positive regardless of the score. The training have a great balance with teaching skills through a range of cleverly developed games. The best part of watching them is the children are allowed to make their own decisions and the only coaching you hear from the sidelines is encourage the team rather than instructions.

What is unique about the coach’s approach to creating a positive environment in sport and active recreation?

Leianne has a focus on crating a community where everybody is included. She want everybody in their team to be included and having fun. This year welcome and a number of new players and a couple of girls. She initiated the conversation that she would love some players who are new to football and keen. She has given these children a great first opportunity in the start of their sporting life.

What are some of the results and/or growth observed in the coach’s athletes in the last 12 months?

I have noticed how enaged the new players are who have joined. I see them more confident when playing and running around with a smile on their face. A number of the players are new and they know what they are doing on the field and clearly part of the team. I saw that at a current 5 aside tournament where a player ended up helping out his brothers team who was two year old. He was confident and happy helping out the other team compared with the start of the year when he would not have been able to do this. I see at lunchtime these kids all out playing football and running around enjoying sport.
