Your Community Unsung Hero's Name
Grant Rennie
Tell us about the unsung hero and what makes them deserving of this award (over the last 12 months)
Grant is the President of the Hamilton BMX Club and over the last two years he oversaw the reconstruction of the Club track, and worked tirelessly to ensure the track was in pristine condition for the 2022 BMX NZ National Championships. During the 2 year period the Waikato had more than its share of wet weather, that hugely impacted on the progress of the track, plus Covis-19. As the club is run by volunteers it was at time challenging to have enough helping hands, many times it was just Grant and track manager James. Grant lives the other side of town and pushbikes to and from the track to carry out the work required, leaving the vehicle at home for his wife and 4 children, many a time with them bringing him some lunch or tea.
What organisation have they provided their services to?
Hamilton BMX Club
What is the impact of what they have implemented during the nomination period (in the last 12 months), or how have they been instrumental in creating change?
Fighting the weather elements and Covid-19 lockdowns was truly difficult. Grant was cool, calm and collect as he ensured the follow up of earth shifting, removal of old tarseal, Laying of new asphalt, new drains for better flow from the berms, ordering lime to come in and at the same time keep the club operational. Covid-19 was so unkind and Grant was determined the club would push on and get the track to the required standard to Host the 2022 BMX Nationals.
How has their service been of benefit to the community or members in the last 12 months?
The track is in Minogue Park, which is a HCC park open 24/7 to the public. The track has been completely reconstructed and is now back to a high standard for the health and safety of all riders that so choose to ride the track.
