Cleo is the Club Captain of Hamilton Malayalee Badminton Club (HMBC). He also coaches at Cambridge Badminton Club, Cambridge High School and has recently created a Girls' Only session within his club. This initiative has given females the chance to give a new sport a go and improve their abilities in a space where they feel comfortable. He has reached out to females he knows to come along and lead the session and guide participants in learning badminton. Alongside this he is also an accredited Shuttle Time Teacher and Tutor and assists with developing new Shuttle Time Youth Leaders (junior coaches).How has the coach demonstrated commitment to Balance is Better/Good Sports philosophies in the last 12 months?
Cleo makes sure every session is suited to the individual participant. This includes dividing players into groups based on ability, modifying activities so each player can be successful and ensuring all participants get plenty of hitting time so thoroughly enjoy their sessions. He promotes appropriate events to his players of all levels, from ones that are a bit more competitive to those that are entirely for fun and encourage socializing. HMBCs own events cater for different levels ensuring that all players are challenged while enjoying the experience.What is unique about the coach’s approach to creating a positive environment in sport and active recreation?
Cleo always has a great attitude and is willing to assist anyone he can. He always says yes to new opportunities. The well being of his club members and students are at the forefront of his mind and he continually seeks new opportunities to offer them. This has created a ever growing love for the sport where there is something to suit everyone from different activities in sessions to new events that create a spark in someone's mind. All successes are celebrated from senior players placing well in regional competitions to juniors learning to serve for the first time.Offering Girl's Only sessions has created a positive environment for females as they can express themselves without the feeling of being watched by others.
What are some of the results and/or growth observed in the coach’s athletes in the last 12 months?
From 2021 to 2022 the number of participants in all groups that Cleo is involved with have increased significantly. HMBC Development Squad and WBA FUNdamentals have doubled in participants from 40 to 82. Cambridge Badminton Club has also seen an increase in junior members and more students come to the Cambridge High School sessions each week after hearing their peers talk about it and how much they have enjoyed the sessions.All players have grown in confidence and are continuing to challenge themselves. Many have participated in competitions for the first time and come away with results better than they expected. This is a testament to Cleo's coaching and leadership and players continue to grow, not only at badminton but within themselves. Some players from within his junior squads have now been selected into Waikato Badminton Training Squads. This shows the skills they have learnt while being coached by him and his team. The Youth Leaders (junior coaches) that Cleo has assisted with developing have gained many skills including: group management, planning, health and safety, time management and people skills. These coaches now have the ability to deliver their own sessions assist with the growth of the sport.

Cleo is an excellent badminton player and a wonderful coach. He has a charming personality.His postive attitude and hardworking nature made him a favorite coach for many. He put lot of time and effort in to organising events related to badminton. Also bought many small groups of players under one roof club, HMBC.
