Matthew SpenceTell us about the coach (over the last 12 months)
Matt wanted to help revive rugby league in the community and has helped revive the women’s division. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience whilst recognising how important grass roots sport is.How has the coach demonstrated commitment to Balance is Better/Good Sports philosophies in the last 12 months?
Matt has created a warm welcoming team environment. He understands commitment whilst being empathetic to our family and work commitments. He encourages fair play and leads by example. He cares about our safety and well-being.What is unique about the coach’s approach to creating a positive environment in sport and active recreation?
He has created a culture that has not only developed our physical well-being but our mental and emotional well-being. He understands the importance of having a positive outlet for us mums. Playing rugby league is more than just a game for us, and Matt has valued us as players, people and mums. What are some of the results and/or growth observed in the coach’s athletes in the last 12 months?
As previously mentioned it is more than playing a sport for us. We have 27 women turn up for training and ready to play. We all get a game and the growth in many of our players has been immense. Prior to the competition, we only had six players who had previously played league and a couple who had never played a sport before in their lives!! Yes we did win games but it wasn’t about that for us, it was about growing a sport and making connections.Comments

Matty Spence has been an awesome coach this league season. Being my first season of league along with a lot of my team mates he has been an encouraging, supportive, humble coach. He allows us to make mistakes and then on learn from them. We may have given him a heap of extra grey hair yet he has stuck with us and continues to coach us. The knowledge he has given us has enabled us to go from a team of near nothing to a team holding something special which is a-lot of HEART. Proud to be apart of our Dambusters womens team as it’s been 20+ years since this team has played again.
